“The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will.” Proverbs 21:1

A stream of water flowing down a mountain side is quite a sight to behold. The stream has a fixed path. It does not change direction unless something blocks its flow or alters its course or something outside of the laws of nature forces it to change direction.

God made the heavens and the earth (Psalm 19:1) and has displayed his glory in creation. Proverbs describes the Lord in His perfect sovereignty as One who directs and turns the heart of the king wherever He wishes. When the king is delighting in the Lord and seeking to do God’s will this is a good thing. When the king is not delighting in the Lord but pursuing idols and the desires of his own heart, his heart may be directed in a different path and he will experience consequences from those desires.

Whether a king or not a king all men and women are subjects of God and His divine plans and purposes. For Jeremiah, God had plans to prosper him and to give him hope. For Goliath and Pharaoh God had plans to destroy them and demonstrate His righteousness in judgment against them.

For the believer who is a new creation in Christ, old things have gone and the new things have come. Among these new things are a new heart from the Lord along with His guiding and loving hand into His will and pleasures forever more.

Lord, lead us, guide us, and direct us today by Your Spirit, for Your glory, and for our good. Teach us to trust You, to pray to You and to find You in Your word, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
